Viewing Kamishibai Stories with the Accursed Toys Viewer

So you've decided to use the Accursed Toys Viewer in order to play the Kamishibai stories that you download? Now we'll try to take you step by step through the installation process and on how to view the stories you get.

Installing Your Player:

The first thing you will need to do is download the Accursed Toys Viewer Executable file onto your computer.  Go to the Kamicross website and use the Kamicross Nav bar to take you to the "Kamishibai Programs" page.

Right Click and select "Save Target As"

Then you'll need scroll to the bottom of the page where the downloads are kept.  Right-click the Accursed Toys download link and click "Save Target As" to begin the downloading process, as shown above.

Save the file in "My Documents"

You can save the file anywhere you wish but for now let's place it in the "My Documents" folder so that it's easier to remember where you placed the application. Allow the download process to finish completely and then open up the "My Documents" folder on your computer so that we can install your new viewer.

Double Click program file to start installation

Next you will need to go to the file and double click it so that you can start the installation process.  If your computer asks you if you'd like to run the program go ahead and agree to run the .exe application.  Then all you have to do is follow the instructions for installation.

Be sure to install program on C Drive in the "Program Files" folder

Something that will be important for later instructions concerns the destination of the installation.  Once again you can tell your computer to install the Kamishibai program anywhere, but to follow later instructions you should install it on your C Drive (or main drive) in the "Program Files" folder.  Don't worry if the other words you see in the picture above don't appear, just click next to finish the installation.

Installation is all done!

Once that is all completed you'll find that if you go to your "Start" menu and look under "Programs" the Kamishibai tab is now present as seen in the above photo. It will always be there so your next step can be to actually start the program and read the kamishibai stories that come with the player, download other stories to read, or stop and continue this tutorial later.

Viewing Stories on your Player:

When it comes to the Accursed Toys Kamishibai Viewer/Player don't forget that it already comes with two stories that you can read immediately.  For the other stories that you download you will need to either place the stories in the proper folder so that the Accursed Toys Player can find them or extract them in the proper location.  It all depends on where you download your stories from, because Otaku World traditionally takes all Kamishibai stories submitted and turns them into executable/installation files for easy placement. We'll try to explain things for both methods.

The important point to understand is that all Kamishibai stories are held within a folder that needs to be placed somewhere for use.  We should now take a look at where all of the stories must be held for the Accursed Toys Kamishibai Viewer.

Go to "Accursed Toys" folder in the "Program Files" Folder on C Drive

Remember earlier when we told you to install the program on the C Drive and in the "Program Files" folder? Well now that is exactly where you're going to need to go at this moment so that you can check out the "Accursed Toys" Folder, as you see in the picture above. Double click on the folder to enter it.

Go into the "Kamishibai" Folder in the "Accursed Toys" folder

Inside of the Accursed Toys Folder you'll see another Folder that says "Kamishibai" Double click on this folder also to enter it.

Go into the "Stories" folder. Remember how to get here for later!

Once inside of the "Kamishibai" folder you'll see the files that involve the heart and soul of the Accursed Toys Player. There is the actual program launch file, a few text files explaining Kamishibai creation, and most importantly the "Stories" folder. If you ever plan on creating Kamishibai of your own you'll see this part of the folder many many times over.

This is the "Stories" Folder, where all story folders should be placed

However, for our purposes right now it is the "Stories" folder that concerns us, because any stories that you download and plan to use with the Accursed Toys viewer MUST BE PLACED IN THIS FOLDER or the program won't know the story is on your computer.

Now we'll deal with extracting a story folder from Otaku World or by association a zip file extraction program.

Double click on the .exe file

After you've found the .exe you've downloaded from Otaku World double click it to begin the process of putting it in the "Stories" folder.

C:\Program Files\Accursed Toys\Kamishibai

If asked if you would like to run this file select yes or "run" and continue.  The above screen should come up and this part is very easy.  Because in the white box you basically see once again the file being told to go to the "Program Files" folder on your C Drive.  But you have to be careful with what is fully placed in that box. This is the command line that you should place there EVERY TIME:

"C:\Program Files\Accursed Toys\Kamishibai"

Giving it any other command line would place your story in the wrong location. After you have that line in place simply press "Unzip" and you're all done.  If you're extracting the file using winzip or some other zip file extraction program then add "\Stories" to the end of that line. You're Kamishibai should be there for viewing after your computer finishes that process.

Open the Kamishibai Player, press "New Game", and the story you downloaded should be in the listing that appears.

Find the zip file with the story you wish to extract

What do you when what you're using is not an executable file or really compatible with a zip extraction program?  You have to do everything manually in that case which is also quite simple.  All it requires is an easy copy and paste move.  Begin by finding the the zip file with your story in it.

Right Click, go to "Open with", and select "Compressed (Zipped) Folders"

Right click on the file and go down to "Open With", you must then select "Compressed (Zipped) Folders" as you see above.  If you do not have Windows XP I would recommend downloading a trial version of Winzip and using that for a while.

Right Click, and select copy

Once your computer opens the file up go directly to the folder with the file name, Right-Click, and select "Copy". Then, as you saw earlier in this tutorial, go back into "Stories" folder, Right-click again and select paste.  Once your computer finishes the pasting function the Kamishibai is all ready for viewing.

Open the Kamishibai Player, press "New Game", and the story you downloaded should be in the listing that appears.

And that's it! If you have any trouble please email us.
